Advice to Fall Paddlers: Leaves are changing color to paint the landscape as days shorten and daytime temperatures drop. Power boaters are mostly off the water and under wraps until May. The local waters are quieting down and we are more likely to encounter wildlife - perfect for paddlers! Water temperatures lag behind, and may be warmer than the air through September and even into October. It's time to remember our 60/120 rule for paddling. If the air + water temperature is below 120F or if the water is below 60F consider donning protective clothing! We recommend hydroskin pants and shirt along with a paddle jacket or wind breaker for early fall paddling. Later in the fall, consider a full wetsuit and paddle top or even a drysuit with an insulation layer. We ALWAYS wear our life jackets but from 10/1 to 5/31 in CT and 11/1 to 5/1 in NY they are required by law to be worn by paddlers. Consult our Trip Planning page for more tools to plan a safe trip. Paddle safe and have fun!

NOTE! SKSA has a new URL: as of October 2017 our sister company on Long Island has received a new website name. If you are looking for SKSA you can now find it at SKSAltd.com. Thank you for your patience and support.

New Fall BYOB (bring your own boat) Tours: Enjoy the water as the foliage changes. We have selected a series of locations in the local area that are picturesque and relaxing for fall paddlers. BYOB tours are our most cost efficient tours. See our Tours for more information. Call us at 860-799-5459 for questions and registration.

Pending Winter Pool Classes: Winter pool classes are a great way to learn strokes and rescues (even kayak rolling) in a controlled comfortable environment. We may even be able to schedule open dates for practice sessions to keep skills from languishing over the winter. We are currently working to schedule winter pool classes at a suitable location in western CT and your feedback will help us decide the location and plan the best classes. Contact us at 860-799-5459 with your input or email us using the form on our Contact page. Thanks for your help!

Pending Small Craft Navigation:Navigation for self-propelled craft is different from standard navigaion classes which presume a chart table is available along with sophisticated instrumentation. Finding your way with a compass, deck chart and tide table is a separate study. We are currently in the set-up stage for one or more winter navigation classes at an indoor location. The schedule will depend on interest level. Contact us if you have an interest to learn about tides, tidal currents, chart reading, laying out a course, plotting your location and preparing for a trip. This is an off-water class to be held this winter. Let us know!

Pending Trip Planning:Planning a trip in kayak, canoe or SUP is much different than considerations for larger craft. Usually space is limited so choices for gear and supplies are critical. Safety and success is a function of planning and preparation. We are currently in the set-up stage for one or more trip planning classes at an indoor location for the coming winter. The schedule will depend on interest level. Contact us if you have an interest to learn about personal and group safety gear, clothing and supplies, weather awareness, tide and current effects, paddling in wind, shoreline dynamics, group capabilities and more. Thanks for the feedback!

Pending Leadership Theory:Do you lead on-water trips for your friends or club? Would you like to know more about advanced topics in leading on-water trips? We are currently in the set-up stage for one or more Leadership Theory classes at an indoor location for the coming winter. The schedule will depend on interest level. Contact us if you have an interest to learn about leadership styles, decision making, rescue priorities and operations, group management and communications, risk assessment, risk mitigation, personal liability and more. This is the off-water portion of our standard Trip Leader class to be held sometime this winter if there is sufficient support. Please let us know your interest.

Pending Wilderness First Aid:What can you do when someone in your group is hurt and help is not a phone call away? This 2-day course includes a 2-year certification in Wilderness First aid and is preferred to fulfill the FA requirement for on-water Instructors as well as a variety of other outdoor professionals. If you lead casual trips for friends or a club, this will be useful and helpful training to have in an emergency. Depending on level of interest we hope to bring in an outside instructor for this program at an indoor location during the coming winter. This is an expensive program and requires minimum numbers to run. Please advise us of your interest.
